A Hologram for the King

For an intimate scene with actor Tom Hanks the DoP Frank Griebe and Director Tom Tykwer used the Kenworthy-Nettmann Snorkel Camera, a remote image taking system with operator and camera components removed from shooting area –  provided by MAT. The camera looks into a periscope-like optical  relay tube that extends downwards below the camera and ends with a small front-surfaced mirror, that takes the close and nearly “smelly” images of Tom Hanks as he breaks out in sweat.
This way a scene full of atmosphere was established – including unconventional, exciting camera angles.
